Providing support both in prison and in the transition after release
The Community Reintegration Service was developed by Tosú in response to the increase in people being released from prison without timely supports to facilitate successful reintegration into their communities. Releases are increasingly unscheduled, due to pressures from overcrowding.
The aim of the Community Reintegration Service (CRS) is to start work with clients in the period before their release and continue after release, as they strive to reintegrate in the community. The Community Reintegration Service is unique in providing support both in prison and in the transition after release.
The work of our ‘Community Reintegration Coordinators’ (CRCs) focuses on supporting clients to identify their needs and appropriate services such as accommodation, medical card supports and social welfare. We also signpost supports such as addiction services, training, educational and employment opportunities.
This service starts working with clients when they are approaching their release date and this means that we can link up with addiction residential treatment centres where clients can go directly after leaving prison, before returning to the community.
The Community Reintegration Service is for clients who are serving a sentence that is longer than 3 months and have the right to a medical card. If your sentence is longer than 3 months, you also have a right to welfare and access to accommodation options.
It is available to you if you have not seen a Tosú Resettlement Coordinator or Training and Employment Officer, and your release date is within 4 weeks. The service will also be available to you if you are released before your work with our Tosú staff in prison was completed. Referrals are made by Tosú’s prison-based Resettlement Coordinators or Tosú Training and Employment Officers.
